REMEMBER! When you multiply your digits move left and when you divide your digits move right.

The distance they move depends on the amount of zeros in your number. If you are multiplying by 100 they move left, 2 spaces because 100 has 2 zeros! The decimal point does not move! Use the place value chart below to help you.

For today you will be calculating the perimeter of a shape using a grid (tomorrow we will move on to using mm/cm/km to work out the perimeter of rectangles). Today is all about estimating! This is a really important skill as it helps you to look at your answer and check if it looks right. We use rounding to make the numbers in the calculation easier and then see if the answer we get is close to this.

For example, if I asked you to work out 1490 - 818 and you thought it was 225 you could check if your answer looks right by estimating and seeing how far off your answer is.

We do this by rounding the numbers in the calculation:

1490 to the nearest 100 is 1500

818 to the nearest 100 is 800

Now your numbers are much easier to do in your head.

1500 - 800 = 700

You can now see that your answer of 225 is very far off from 700, so you would need to have another go at the question!
