We are currently open to Nursery, Reception, Year 1, Year 5 and Year 6

### Re-cap challenges

Each day this week you will have four challenges to complete. The questions will cover all of the learning done so far in Year 4. Each day you will have:

• Fluent in five
• A word problem
• An ‘explain it’ question
• A challenge question

Remember to also spend some time on Times Table Rockstars each day.

Maths Task - 11 and 12 x tables

Welcome back! I hope you have had a lovely half term break and have been enjoying the sunshine! We are going to be focussing on multiplication and division again this week. Because this is a recap of something we have done quite a lot of in school, you should be able to work through these on your own using the methods we have learnt earlier in the year. Here is a knowledge organiser to remind you of the key learning:

Today we are looking at multiplying numbers by 1 and 0.

REMEMBER! Multiplying a number by 1 means you have one lot of that number, so the answer is the same as the number you are multiplying by 1. For example:

7 x 1 = 7

1 x 12 = 12

Any number multiplied by 0 is 0.

2 x 0 = 0

0 x 9 = 0

Today we will start with multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100.

REMEMBER! When you multiply your digits move left and when you divide your digits move right.

The distance they move depends on the amount of zeros in your number. If you are multiplying by 100 they move left, 2 spaces because 100 has 2 zeros! The decimal point does not move! Use the place value chart below to help you.

Today is all about estimating! This is a really important skill as it helps you to look at your answer and check if it looks right. We use rounding to make the numbers in the calculation easier and then see if the answer we get is close to this.

For example, if I asked you to work out 1490 - 818 and you thought it was 225 you could check if your answer looks right by estimating and seeing how far off your answer is.

We do this by rounding the numbers in the calculation:

1490 to the nearest 100 is 1500

818 to the nearest 100 is 800

1500 - 800 = 700

You can now see that your answer of 225 is very far off from 700, so you would need to have another go at the question!

Today we are going to look back at partitioning. Partitioning big numbers into smaller chunks can help with lots of other things in maths, so it is important you can find different ways of splitting up numbers.

First, remind yourself how to partition by watching the video linked below:

Can you work out which numbers have been partitioned here?

There is a powerpoint linked below with examples of partitioning questions, then have a go at the worksheet for today!

For your maths learning each day, we will now be going back over some of our previous learning in maths - things you have already done so far in Year 4, so you can remind yourself of what you learnt and make sure you can still use the learning we did! Because we have already covered this topic, you should be able to complete the tasks independently.

We will start with some place value work this week. Before you start, have a look at the knowledge organiser below - this will help you with all the tasks for the place value topic.

Today we are starting with rounding to the nearest 10. There is a video linked to remind you how we do this, a powerpoint to go through and then a worksheet to complete. When you have finished, the answers are also below so you can check through your work.
