Spring 2

Week 1:

The children have been detectives this week, trying to uncover who was stealing the branches in the English book 'The Great Paper Caper'. In Maths, we have started our new unit of counting from 20 to 50 using dienes and numicons to help us. In Design and Technology, we created our own vegetable salad to feed to the Guinea Pigs! We tried all of the ingredients...Swift Class agreed that Spring Onions were our least favourite - have you tried them?

Week 2:

Our new Science unit is all about Materials- we have been looking at the different properties of Plastics, Glass, Wood and Metal. We can organise different objects into groups and identify multiple materials in a single object such as glass, plastic and metal in a pair of glasses!

Week 3:

This week we have been using objects to count the length of different objects. We have noticed that the total will be different depending on what objects we are using. It was also World Book Day on Thursday, we completed many activities throughout the day that were based on our book "The Great Paper Caper". We made our own bear Origami's and had a competition in KS1 for the best paper aeroplane!

Week 4:

We have had a jam packed week filled with lots of different activities such as: completing our own versions of the story "The Great Paper Caper", starting our new book "Iggy Peck Architect" in English and conducting our very own experiment in Science to try and make a waterproof coat for Harley the Teddy! In Maths, we have been looking at the mass of objects in cubes - did you know that a full water bottle has a mass of over 50 cubes! On Thursday, we had a Spring Disco where we showed off our best dance moves and ate some very tasty pizza...YUM!

Week 5:

Science Week!

This week, Year 1 have been exploring two topics in Science. First topic, how to be an engineer and create a safe and sturdy bridge! Second topic was time in relation to the recycling process. We have had the pleasure of listening to stories created by a real life engineer who built many bridges that we can walk on every day. In addition, we welcomed a STEM ambassador who helped us create a bridge that could support the weight of a toy train using recyclable materials. Within our science lessons, we have also learnt about a famous scientist called John Dunlop who invented the Dunlop Tyre!

In Maths, we created our very own lemonade stand and helped to pour different volumes of juice in to a cup- who knew full cups were hard to empty!
