Phonics

Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another.

Children in reception class have phonics lessons every day. Each week we introduce 4 phonemes (sounds) and work on our blending skills (to help with reading) and segmenting skills (to help with writing and spelling).

Practising these at home will support your child in making significant progress.

These are the phonemes we will be learning each week;

Autumn 1

Week beginning 11th September - s/a/t/p

Week beginning 18th September - i/n/m/d

Week beginning 25th September - g/o/c/k

Week beginning 2nd October - ck/e/u/r

Week beginning 9th October - h/b/f/l

Week beginning 16th October - Recapping phonemes (sounds).

Week beginning 23rd October - ff/ll/ss/j

Tricky Words taught this half term - 'is', 'I', 'The', 'as'.

Autumn 2

Week beginning 6th November - v/w/x/y

Week beginning 13th November - z/zz/qu/ch and words with s added at the end (hats).

Week beginning 20th November - sh/th/ng/nk

Week beginning 27th November - words with s added at the end (hats), words ending s /z/ (his), and words with s /z/ added at the end (bags).

Week beginning 4th December - Recapping phonemes (sounds).

Week beginning 11th December - ai/ee/igh/oa

Tricky Words taught this half term - 'and', 'has', 'his', 'her', 'go', 'no', 'to', 'into', 'she', 'he', 'of', 'we', 'me' , 'be'.
