Phonics
Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another.
Children in reception class have phonics lessons every day. Each week we introduce 4 phonemes (sounds) and work on our blending skills (to help with reading) and segmenting skills (to help with writing and spelling).
Practising these at home will support your child in making significant progress.
These are the phonemes we will be learning each week;
Autumn 1
Week beginning 11th September - s/a/t/p
Week beginning 18th September - i/n/m/d
Week beginning 25th September - g/o/c/k
Week beginning 2nd October - ck/e/u/r
Week beginning 9th October - h/b/f/l
Week beginning 16th October - Recapping phonemes (sounds).
Week beginning 23rd October - ff/ll/ss/j
Tricky Words taught this half term - 'is', 'I', 'The', 'as'.
Autumn 2
Week beginning 6th November - v/w/x/y
Week beginning 13th November - z/zz/qu/ch and words with s added at the end (hats).
Week beginning 20th November - sh/th/ng/nk
Week beginning 27th November - words with s added at the end (hats), words ending s /z/ (his), and words with s /z/ added at the end (bags).
Week beginning 4th December - Recapping phonemes (sounds).
Week beginning 11th December - ai/ee/igh/oa
Tricky Words taught this half term - 'and', 'has', 'his', 'her', 'go', 'no', 'to', 'into', 'she', 'he', 'of', 'we', 'me' , 'be'.
Spring 1
Week beginning 8th January - oo/oo/ar/or
Week beginning 15th January - ur/ow/oi/ear
Week beginning 22nd January - air/er/words with double letters: dd, mm, tt, bb, rr, gg, pp, ff
Week beginning 29th January - longer words
Week beginning 6th February - Recapping phonemes (sounds).
Tricky Words taught this half term - 'was', 'you', 'they', 'my', 'by', 'all,' 'are', 'sure', 'pure'.
Spring 2
Week beginning 19th February - Review Phase 3: ai/ee/igh/oa/oo/ar/or/ur/oo/ow/oi/ear
Week beginning 26th February - Review Phase 3: er/air. Read words with double letters and longer words.
Week beginning 4th March - Focus on words with two or more digraphs.
Week beginning 11th March - Focus on longer words, words ending in 'ing', compound words.
Week beginning 18th March - Focus on longer words, words with s in the middle /z/. Words ending in s and words ending in es.
Week beginning 25th March - Review learning.
Review all tricky words taught so far.
Summer 1
Week beginning 15th April - Short vowels CVCC
Week beginning 22nd April - Short vowels CVCC CCVC
Week beginning 29th April - Short vowels CCVCC CCCVC CCCVCC longer words
Week beginning 6th May - Longer words compound words
Week beginning 13th May - Root words ending in: –ing, –ed /t/, –ed /id/ /ed/ –est
Week beginning 20th May - Review learning.
