Autumn Term

Trip to Mansfield Museum

Jay class had a fantastic day at Mansfield Museum today. We got to explore all the different areas and see lots of artefacts about the history of Mansfield. Our topic is looking at the different industries in our local area and so we found out a lot of information about the shoe factory (Shoe Co) which was a big industry in Mansfield. In the afternoon we also got to design and make our own shoes!

The Mining Industry

We started our new topic this week, investigating the impact of industries on our local area. We started by looking at coal mining, what the job involved and some of the equipment the miners used to use. The children had a chance to think about what they might be before we looked at some information about each artefact. Here are some of their ideas:

The children then drew a miner, labeling him with all the equipment we had found out about:

Seasonal Changes

Throughout the year, we are going to look at how the seasons change. This week we have looked at Summer and Autumn. Have a look at some of the posters the children in Jay class have made about the weather, temperature, activities we might do and clothes we wear in summer.

The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig

We have been reading the story of The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, where everything is the opposite to the traditional tale! The pig is big and bad and the wolves are building themselves a house! I was blown away by some of the descriptions of the pig, using expanded noun phrases and similes. I can't wait to read the finished character descriptions.

Henri Matisse Collage

This week we have looked at the work of Henri Matisse. We learned that he began by drawing and painting, but later in his life began to make collages. We really liked his collage called 'The Snail' and so decided to have a go at making our own. We made a design first and then used lots of different materials to finish our creations. Have a look at some of them below!

The Dot

We've gone dotty this week in Jay class! After reading about how Vashti was inspired to keep trying new ways of creating dots, we had a go at designing our own dotty art. We learned about the technique of Pointillism and produced some fantastic work. Have a look at some of them below:
