Phonics and Reading
Phonics
At Birklands, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics scheme to support children in developing strong early reading skills. Phonics is taught daily in a systematic and engaging way, helping children to build their confidence in recognising sounds and blending them to read words. Each week, we will send home learning that is directly linked to the phonics lessons taught in class, so that children can continue to practise and consolidate their skills at home. To support families further, helpful videos and resources are available on Tapestry, showing the sounds and strategies used in school, so that you can practise alongside your child and help them on their reading journey.

Reading
At Birklands, reading is at the heart of our curriculum, and we aim to foster both a love of stories and the skills needed to become confident readers. Each week, children will bring home a Big Cat Collins reading book that is carefully matched to their phonics level; the expectation is that they read this book aloud to parents or carers to practise and apply their phonics learning. Alongside this, children will also bring home a 100 Book—a reading-for-pleasure book chosen from our special collection—which is intended to be shared and enjoyed with an adult. These 100 Books should be returned to school on a Thursday, ready for children to select a new one to take home on Friday.
