Pupil Premium

Statutory Information

The documents below are those required by the DfE to be published on the website.

Pupil Premium Policy

The Pupil Premium is allocated to Local Authorities and Schools with children on roll who are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at anytime in the last six years. Each of these children currently attracts a sum of £1345. Schools will have the freedom to spend the Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) which is an additional part of the underlying budget, in ways that they think will best support the raising of attainment for the most vulnerable children.

Aims

All our work through the pupil premium will be aimed at accelerating progress, moving children to at least age related expectations.

  • To close the attainment gap in Reading.
  • To close the attainment gap in Writing.
  • To close the attainment gap in Mathematics.
  • To continue to improve confidence, independence and self-esteem.
  • To continue to improve attendance and punctuality.
  • To continue to develop parental engagement, support and partnership work to remove barriers to learning.

Principles

  • We ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all children.
  • We ensure that the appropriate provision is made for children who belong to vulnerable groups. This includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged children are adequately assessed and addressed.
  • In making provision for socially disadvantaged children, we recognise that not all children who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged.
  • We also recognise that not all children who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any child or group of children that we legitimately have identified as being socially disadvantaged.
  • Pupil Premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals.
  • Limited funding and resources means that not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of Pupil Premium interventions at one time.

Provision

Pupil Premium funding is mainly spent in the following ways at Birklands Primary School:

  • Delivering specific and measurable intervention, linked specifically to the EEF teaching and learning toolkit.
  • Providing small group work with an experienced teacher focused on overcoming gaps in learning.
  • Offering additional parent workshops and home learning opportunities to support parents to help their children’s learning outside school.
  • Delivering intervention programmes to target newly arrived children and/or those who do not speak English as their first or main language.
  • Targeting more able children and those on the Gifted and Talented register to ensure they reach their full potential.
  • Paying or part subsidising activities that broaden the knowledge of the curriculum or participation in school activities
  • Ensuring good attendance, punctuality and readiness for learning of pupils through the breakfast club provision.
  • Providing a counselling service for vulnerable pupils.
  • After school and holiday booster sessions.

Reporting

It will be the responsibility of the Head of School (Mrs C Smith), or a delegated member of staff, to include the following information in the annual data report for the Governing Body:

  • The progress made towards narrowing the gap, by year group , for socially disadvantaged children
  • An outline of the provision that has been made since the last annual report
  • An evaluation of the cost effectiveness, in terms of the progress made by children receiving a particular provision, when compared with other forms of support.

At the end of the academic year, the Governors of the school will ensure that there is an annual statement to parents on how the Pupil Premium Grant has been used to address the issue of "diminishing the gap" for socially disadvantaged children. This task will be carried out within the requirements published by the Department for Education.
