Reading

Reading

At Birklands Primary School, we aim to develop a love and appreciation of reading which will stay with children for life.

Reading is a top priority for all children as it underpins all the curriculum areas. We as a team want every child to become fluent, competent readers but we can’t do this on our own, we need your support!

Reading at home plays a vital role in developing your child’s learning and can have a massive impact on their progress in school.

Reading book

Currently all children bring home a reading book that is carefully selected to match their phonic knowledge and reading level. This is the book that the children will read to you. Please make a note in your child's reading diary each time they read to you. This will encourage them in their reading journey and demonstrate that time spent reading is valued.

100 books

All children will also bring home a book from one of our ‘100 books to read before you leave Year 2’ list. This is for you to share and discuss events with them. Some of the texts may exceed your child’s reading level - read the book with them, talk about what is happening and look at the illustrations. Share the joy of sharing a book at bedtime. Please write it in their reading diaries and the book will be changed weekly.
