Welcome to Magpie Class

Welcome to Magpie Class

Hello!

We are Mrs Henderson and Mrs Norman, Magpie's class teachers. We cannot wait for the exciting year ahead- we have lots of brilliant things in store. We are also lucky to have teaching assistants, Mrs Gallagher and Mrs Sefton working with us at different points during the week. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to come and see us!

Our Classroom

We expect every child to be the best version of themselves and their behaviour to meet the high standards of Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe. Our classroom will be a challenging place for children to grow as learners, where they are happy to have a go and know we learn from mistakes.

Reading

Reading is a top priority for all children as it underpins all the curriculum areas. By the end of year 1 the national expectation is that children are reading Orange book band books. We as a team want every child to reach that level. But we can’t do this on our own, we need your support!

Reading at home plays a vital role in developing your child’s learning and can have a massive impact on their progress in school. Your child will bring home a book matched to their reading level. This is the book that the children will read to you. Encourage the children to talk about what is happening in the story and to make predictions as well as reading aloud. Each time they read, please write in their diaries.

All children will also bring home a book from one of our ‘100 books to read before you leave Year 2’ list. This is for you to share and discuss events with them. Some of the texts may exceed your child’s reading level and in which case you will need to read it to them. Once you have read the book, write it in their reading diaries so the book can be changed. Books will be changed every week and for every 10 books you read together, your child will receive a certificate.

Homework and spellings

Homework is given to support and extend your child’s learning and they will need adult support and encouragement in order to complete it. It is important that homework is done every week as each task revisits and consolidates previous learning.

Homework will be given out on Thursdays and should be returned no later than the following Tuesday. It will usually include an English or Maths task which link to the work done in school that week. In addition, children will be given spellings to learn on a Monday. Spelling tests will take place on Fridays each week.

If you have any problems or are unsure about their homework tasks, we are here to help.

Times Tables Rock Stars

Times Tables Rock Stars supports the children with their understanding and recall of multiplication and division facts. It is an exciting resource provided by school to engage and interest pupils. Use it at home on your laptop or tablet as much as you can. We have stuck your child’s login in their reading diaries. We will have a weekly champion and certificates will be given out on Fridays.

PE

PE is on Wednesday and Friday each week. Please make sure children come to school in their PE kits on these days. The kit consists of plimsolls or trainers, black shorts and a white t-shirt. When the weather gets colder please ensure your child has leggings or jogging bottoms and a fleece or hoodie.
